Heat Signature Review

Heat Signature is a 2D top-down stealth action game developed and published by Suspicious Developments. People probably know Suspicious Developments from their previous game, Gunpoint; a 2D side-scrolling stealth action game.

The development of Heat Signature started back in 2013 and took about three years to create. In early 2016, Suspicious Developments gave around 2000 people keys to a closed alpha. In September of 2017, Heat Signature saw a full release on Steam.

Taking the videos that were released from the closed alpha and comparing it to the full release on Steam, it’s clear that there was a fair amount that was changed for the better. This was later followed in November with a rather large patch called the Fair Points patch.

The Fair Points patch looked at what the community was complaining about and addressed all the fair points that people had. Sadly, in a post made on the Heat Signature site, Suspicious Developments told us that large updates like this will be few and far between.

You play as one of four randomly generated characters, each with their own starting equipment, backstory, and personal mission relating to said backstory. You can change to any of the other characters at any point between missions. And with an endless line of characters is lined up to replace any of the four, should the meet their end. You’ll never have to worry about running out.

Your goal is to liberate  the nebula which is being controlled by four militant factions. You complete missions to increase your liberation metre. Once the metre is full, you can choose one of many space stations to liberate within the nebula.

The nebula not only acts as a setting for your space adventures to take place, but it also acts as a tech tree. With each station you liberate from one of the factions, you unlock some new item or perk that makes the game even more interesting.

Along with increasing your liberation metre, completing missions also nets you some cash to get yourself better equipment so that you can take on tougher missions.

While I did enjoy the game, there is one major grievance that may deter others from playing. Heat Signature, while there is a fair amount of content and randomness, can get repetitive and boring. Steal this thing, kill this guy, hijack this ship, etc. Eventually this all blurs together and can be quite dull.

If you can look past this issue, or at least endure it enough to get some enjoyment, then I would recommend Heat Signature. If you can’t then I’m sorry to say this game is not for you.
