When I first saw the trailer for Aggretsuko, it was confusing. The trailer was kind of vague of what the plot was exactly. It started out seeming like a show about an office with the gimmick of death metal, but then they start talking about how she needs to get into a relationship.
Aggretsuko is about a 25 year old red panda, Retsuko, who works as an accountant at a trading firm. At her job, she is surrounded with infuriating coworkers and cruel superiors who do nothing but aggravate her to no end. She lets off her frustration by singing death metal in the bathroom at work.
Because the trailer struck me in that way it did, I wasn’t in any hurry to watch Aggretsuko. It was only this past weekend that I was convinced to watch it with one of my friends as we had been hopping through Netflix shows all night.
We watched a couple episodes and I found myself enjoying it, but also having a couple issues with it.
As a fan of metal music in many shapes and forms, I didn’t go into it expecting the death metal to be any good, but was surprised to find that, although each scene with death metal was short, it was good.
Though I did enjoy the death metal, I didn’t really enjoy the character of Retsuko. She is a perfect copy from the mold of a submissive office worker who doesn’t want to rock the boat. Meanwhile, I found some of the side characters like Fenneko, who seem more like actual people instead of archetypes.
I did like how some of the characters were introduced to us. It was usually someone, either talking to themselves or another character, they said their name and gave all the exposition we needed on the character.
Like, ‘That’s so-and-so, she’s my friend from high school’, then the rest of the information we may need is given to us naturally in dialogue instead of it being spoon fed to us like we’re stupid.
My other main issue with it is that the animation can backgrounds can occasionally seem lazy. I try to just chalk it up to art and animation style, but it’s hard to put aside when the characters look like they were animate in Adobe Flash and the backgrounds are reused so much that I could describe them from memory.
It’s kind of a small thing, but if it’s something that would bug you, then you’ll definitely notice it when watching this show.
All-in-all, I enjoyed what I’ve seen of Aggretsuko so far and I plan to watch more of it. I would recommend it if you have some time to kill and are in between shows.
