Does anyone remember Rage? Rage was an first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda. It was released on November 18, 2010 to decent average reviews of around 7/10 and sold well enough to warrant a sequel.
The teaser trailer released yesterday on Bethesda’s YouTube channel is a mixture of both live action and some pre-rendered scenes of enemies from the game. As of writing this, the trailer has yet to break a million views.
At the end of the teaser trailer, they say that a gameplay video will go up on their channel today. Well it is currently on their channel and it is an interesting trailer.
The first shot is of the player using some sort of power to throw an enemy back. Powers similar to this are used throughout the trailer by the player to do things like launch themselves into the air and toss around enemies.
There is also a fair amount of driving shown, which was one of the main mechanics in the first Rage game. The driving was quite nice in Rage, so I hope that the quality of this staple in the games stays high.
The world in which you play was also showcased. The trailer states that it has a “Wide Open World”. Throughout the trailer we can see that there are a variety of environments like lush forests, deserts, swampy mires, and ruined cities.
There was one thing that may be an issue with the wide open world I did notice. At about 1 minute and 26 seconds in, we see a horde of enemies in a flat, barren stretch of land. This makes me worry that there won’t be things populating this open world and there will be large areas with nothing to do but just to traverse them to get to the next mission.
A large swath of enemies were also showcased. Ranging from tribes of murderous, insane raiders to what appear to be cyber-mutants with rocket launchers and giant creatures wearing car parts for armor.
The combat appears to be quite fast-paced almost reminiscent of Doom 2016, which was also developed by id Software. The trailer defines it as “Insane Action”.
I do have another worry about this game. The trailer starts with a serious narration that ends about half way through with the music changing to this more exciting rock music. My worry is that there will be a conflict in tone which would make the story or the combat seem out of place, affecting one's enjoyment of the game.
To be honest, my curiosity is piqued and I look forward to seeing more of this game and possibly even playing it in the future.
